Let me tell you my story. I lost my period for almost 4 years and believe me I felt desperate, frustrated, and lost as I tried so many different things to heal Functional Hypothalamic Amenorrhea without any prescribed hormones.
I changed my doctor three times and no one was even able to tell me what is happening - the only thing I’ve heard was to get a hormonal replacement - birth control which I withdrew a few months before for some reason and I never planned to go back.
I truly believed that I don’t need any of these and that I can heal my body from the root. I wasn’t ever told the term amenorrhea, I learnt everything through my research. I tried herbs, therapy, hormonal yoga, and different practices to get my period back.
On the other side, I was always an active person who loved sports. I went to the gym when I was 16 years old and unfortunately, as I grew up, my relationship with my body took the wrong direction.
Before and during my period was missing, I struggled with eating disorders and body dysmorphia. These conditions are very correlated among female athletes. My problem was that even though I looked like a very healthy, fit and active person, it was too much.
My eating disorder developed around age 12, I used to be very anxious, and as I grew up, I experienced a very toxic relationship at age 18 and I never felt good enough as my girlfriends were.
I became very negative towards myself I abused my body because of my disordered habits. I disconnected from my body and from who I am.
Because of that, my recovery felt like a hamster wheel. I was missing a very important piece to healing myself.
I was focusing so hard only on that missing period but I didn’t realize that I need to put myself together and understand under what stress I am putting my body every day - by overtraining, not resting, dieting and then binging and purging, not fueling my body adequately, fear eating, doing cardio to burn extra calories, by being disgusted by every look in the mirror.
It may sound like a cliche but there is much more to focus on than just that main issue - MISSING/IRREGULAR PERIOD.
I healed my body, recovered from amenorrhea and eating disorders, improved my body image and self-love, found self-compassion, and learnt how to train gently without focusing on weight loss.
I have a regular period, no PMS, less anxiety, and finally have my libido back.
